Anyone living in Florida who is ready to make an attempt to quit can use the Tobacco Free Florida Quitline. Tobacco Free Florida is a program of the Florida Department of Health that offers a number of free and convenient resources to help tobacco users quit. Coaching is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are three ways to quit: Call, click or come in.

• Phone: Call the Tobacco Free Florida Quitline at 1-877-U-CAN-NOW (1.877.822.6669) to speak with a Quit Coach who will help you assess your addiction and help you create a personalized quit plan.

• In-person: Visit the Florida Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Network's website, http://www.ahectobacco.com/, to locate your local AHEC and sign up for Quit Smoking Now group classes.

The QuitSmart system uses a kit with a guidebook as well as an audio aid with a minimum of 3 classes. This is not a free service: the cost is $100 for the series.

Healthy Start offers in-home tobacco cessation counseling for pregnant women or families of infants enrolled in their program.

This program is offered to all active duty members and eligible Tricare beneficiaries. The program offers an initial one hour session focusing on the effects of nicotine addiction and emphasizes behavior modification, stress management, nutrition management, weight management, and relapse prevention.

The Quit Smoking Now program will take a tobacco user through a six week program, one hour a week and assist them in learning "why they smoke," how to deal with triggers, learn stress management techniques, and coping with withdrawal symptoms. This is accomplished in a stress-free, no-pressure supportive group environment where everyone has the same goal in mind... QUITTING. The group is led and guided by a tobacco cessation counselor, but is participant driven. Northeast Florida AHEC hosts these FREE classes in seven counties, Baker, Clay, St. Johns, Duval, Flagler, Volusia, and Nassau.

The Quality Life Center hosts local meetings of Nicotine Anonymous, a non-profit 12-step fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Big Step is a four-week smoking cessation program open to the public. Topics include yoga and meditation as an aid to smoking cessation. The program starts on the first Wednesday of each month and continues through the following three Wednesdays. Meetings are held at 11:30 a.m. - 1pm.The cost is $5.00 per session. Also available is the Shands Healthy Start program offering free cessation classes for pregnant women and their families. (904-544-4843)

The American Cancer Society Quit For Life Program operated by Alere Wellbeing is a phone-based coaching and Web-based learning support service to help people quit smoking. Participants are matched with a Quit Coach who helps them develop a personalized quit plan, provides guidance in choosing medicines, and gives ongoing follow-up support. This program has helped more than 1 million tobacco users make a plan to quit for good. The telephone hotline also has a database of area resources, in addition to educational materials to assist in quitting. EX is a free plan that will help you stop smoking. It’s not about why to quit. EX is all about HOW to quit. The plan was created by medical experts and tested by real smokers (ex-smokers). The website includes many interactive tools to help re-learn how to live life without cigarettes. Each section of the website includes useful information and a workbook. EX is tailored to help users with tools to set quit dates and provide ongoing education and motivation. The EX community also offers support from others trying to quit and ex-smokers. The American Lung Association operates Freedom From Smoking, a free nationwide telephone- and internet-based program that offers counseling and information about quitting. The Call Center is staffed by Registered Nurses and Registered Respiratory Therapists. The Call Center staff have extensive experience in the healthcare industry. Areas of expertise include: Education, Smoking Cessation, Respiratory Therapy, Lung Disease, Nursing, Physician Referral, Respiratory Home Care, Neonatal, Pediatric, and Adult Intensive Care, Medicare, Medicaid, Private Insurance, Medication Counseling, Patient Advocacy, Health Care Insurance, and Nursing Case Management. This service is free from the Department of Defense and was designed for service members. Features include tips, message boards, games, quizzes, blogs, a My Quit Plan, live chat with a smoking cessation coach, and Train2Quit, a step-by-step guide that complements cessation programs at installations.
